Programs & Initiatives

Rhino Connect runs a variety of targeted programs to protect rhinos and other wildlife partnership conservation programs.

Rhino protection across South Africa

Air, K9 & Anti-Poaching Support

Overview

Rhino Connect coordinates air, K9 and field response across a growing network of private rhino custodians in South Africa. When threats arise, we activate aviation partners, anti-poaching initiatives and security teams to support custodians and protect rhinos on the ground.

How it works

Through conservation partnerships, we coordinate:

  • Helicopter surveillance and response
  • Bloodhound K9 tracking and snare-detection teams
  • Emergency field deployment
  • Cross-custodian support
  • Anti-poaching initiatives across multiple reserves

Why this matters
Professional response capacity strengthens wildlife conservation sustainability by ensuring that private custodians are supported at all times — both through rapid response in high-risk situations and through ongoing, preventative field support.

Critical care when it counts

Specialist Veterinary & Research Support

Overview

Rhino Connect coordinates specialist veterinary interventions across private custodians and partner reserves. From emergency response to routine procedures and conservation research, veterinary support is central to keeping rhinos alive and healthy.

How it works

We help coordinate and support:

  • Emergency treatment and immobilizations
  • Horn procedures and health monitoring
  • Translocations and medical interventions
  • Rehabilitation support
  • Conservation research collaboration
  • Sample collection and veterinary data support

Veterinary specialists operate across the network, ensuring expertise can be deployed where and when it is needed.

Why this matters
Access to experienced wildlife veterinarians is essential for rhino survival. By connecting private rhino custodians with trusted specialists, supporting relevant conservation science, and helping make procedures more accessible, we strengthen conservation outcomes across the network.

Rhino sanctuary support in Limpopo

Sanctuary, Rehabilitation & Research Hub

Overview

Our sanctuary in Limpopo provides rhino sanctuary support for animals that cannot remain safely with custodians due to injury, orphaning or security pressure. The aim is always rehabilitation and rewilding wherever possible.

How it works

The sanctuary provides:

  • Temporary placement
  • Rehabilitation
  • Orphan care
  • Research collaboration
  • Veterinary training
Why this matters
Sanctuaries play a critical role in supporting private rhino custodians and strengthening the broader wildlife protection network across South Africa.

Building long-term conservation capacity

Education & Public Awareness

Overview
Education strengthens wildlife conservation sustainability. Rhino Connect runs training and outreach initiatives that support communities, students and professionals involved in rhino conservation in South Africa.
How it works

Rhino Connect runs education and public awareness initiatives designed to build long-term support for rhino conservation and wildlife protection.

These initiatives focus on connecting the next generation to real conservation work and sharing knowledge across communities and professions.

This includes:

  • School outreach and conservation awareness activities
  • Youth camps and hands-on learning experiences
  • Public awareness initiatives and events
  • International veterinary student programs – www.rhinovetstudents.com
  • Knowledge-sharing with conservation and veterinary professionals

Where possible, programmes are delivered in partnership with custodians, schools and conservation specialists, ensuring that learning remains grounded in real-world conservation challenges and solutions.

Supporting orphaned rhinos across South Africa

Rhino Milk Run

Overview

The Rhino Milk Run provides milk and other nutrition to rhino orphanages and care facilities across South Africa. Rather than supporting a single sanctuary, the initiative distributes milk where it is most needed, ensuring that orphaned calves across multiple facilities receive consistent nutritional support.

Rhino calves that lose their mothers require intensive care and specialised milk that can cost thousands of rands per month. The Milk Run helps relieve that burden by coordinating fundraising, sourcing and delivery across the wider conservation network.

How it works

Through partnerships, sponsorships and community-driven fundraising, Rhino Connect sources and delivers specialized milk formula to facilities caring for orphaned rhinos. Support is provided based on need, regardless of organizational affiliation.

The initiative brings together individuals, schools, companies and community groups to contribute toward a shared goal: ensuring that orphaned rhinos receive the nutrition required to survive and grow.

Milk is distributed to multiple orphan care facilities across South Africa, strengthening collaboration rather than competition between organizations caring for young rhinos.

Why this matters

Orphaned rhinos are among the most vulnerable animals in conservation. Without consistent access to milk and intensive care, survival rates drop significantly.

By coordinating support across facilities, the Rhino Milk Run helps ensure that no orphan is left without essential nutrition. It also strengthens cooperation across the broader rhino conservation community, reinforcing the network approach that underpins Rhino Connect’s work.
